“Some of you may have thought the government was not sincere. But the government sent letters seeking the formation of the search committee. We did not receive the necessary cooperation until yesterday,” he added.

He said the search committee will now be formed, followed by the reconstitution of the ACC.

Earlier, independent MP Rumeen Farhana criticised the government for not ratifying the ACC ordinance, which was passed by the interim government.

In Bangladesh, the two professions most associated with corruption are politics and bureaucracy. Politicians top the list, followed by civil servants, she said.

Rumeen said Bangladesh had witnessed major corruption scandals over the years, including irregularities in banking, mega projects, recruitment, promotions and public procurement.

“After August 5, we expected the ACC to be transformed from a toothless tiger into a strong institution in the era of ‘New Bangladesh’,” she said.
