Zahed said he has discussed the issue with the prime minister.

“We are reviewing the agreement within the government. It is a very strong agreement and we understand the impact if it is cancelled, as well as the context in which it was signed. However, we can consider revisiting certain areas that we believe may be detrimental to the state. We would like to enter negotiations with them.”

Cancelling it may again create complications in bilateral relations or reciprocal tariffs.

Responding to another question, he said there are different types of agreements, including contracts and memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

“Some agreements are legally binding. In many cases, the legal bindings are so strict that leaving them can be more harmful than staying.”

A democratically elected government takes multiple factors into account in such decisions, he said.

The government will form an investigation committee involving international organisations to probe the ongoing measles vaccine crisis in the country, Zahed said.

Describing the current measles situation as a disaster, he said he had personally spoken with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman regarding the vaccine shortage.

Not only Bangladesh but also several international organisations are expected to be involved in the probe.

Vaccination activities are ongoing, but building a strong community response will take time, he said.
