The High Court yesterday granted former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque six months’ ad-interim bail in two murder cases filed over incidents during the July uprising, paving the way for his release from jail.

The court also issued two separate rules asking the state to explain why Khairul should not be granted permanent bail in the cases.

One case, filed with Jatrabari Police Station, accuses him in connection with the killing of Arif, while the other, filed with Adabor Police Station, concerns the killing of Rubel during the uprising, said Advocate Md Motaher Hossain Sazu, a lawyer for Khairul.

According to the defence lawyer, there is now no legal bar to Khairul’s release from Keraniganj Central Jail following the HC orders.

The HC bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the orders after hearing two separate bail petitions filed by Khairul.
