Four members of a family suffered severe burn injuries after an explosion, suspected to have been caused by accumulated gas, ripped through a house in Narayanganj’s Fatullah early yesterday.

The injured were identified as Abdul Kader, 50, and his three sons -- Mehedi, 17; Sakib, 16; and his twin Rakib, 16.

They were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in critical condition.

Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the burn institute, said Kader suffered burns to 57 percent of his body, while Mehedi suffered burns to 18 percent, Sakib 17 percent, and Rakib 25 percent.

“All four are in critical condition and are undergoing treatment,” the doctor said.

The explosion occurred around 6:30am in the Kutubpur Rakhibazar area beside Shibu Market in Fatullah.

Md Faruk, a neighbour who helped rescue the victims and take them to hospital, said Abdul Kader lived in the rented ground-floor house with his wife and three sons. Kader’s wife was not home at the time of the blast.
