During visits to several points along the flyover, this correspondent found water gushing down from the structure both during and after rainfall.

In some areas, the force of the falling water was strong enough to temporarily disrupt traffic, particularly for motorcyclists and rickshaw pullers.

Many commuters had to slow down or stop abruptly as water poured onto moving vehicles and pedestrians.

Residents said the problem was worsening an already difficult rainy-day commute in the port city.

“When water falls suddenly, it affects visibility and balance. It can easily lead to accidents, especially on slippery roads,” said motorcyclist Mohammed Ruble.

Mohammed Mayen Uddin, a shopper from the GEC Mor area, said he has noticed water spilling from the flyover near the Peninsula point at GEC during rainfall over several monsoon seasons.

He alleged that the problem has persisted for a long time with little visible action from the authorities.

According to government data, the flyover was constructed by the Chattogram Development Authority and later handed over to the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) as per rules. The CCC engineering department is now responsible for maintaining the structure.

Contacted, Mohammed Rifatul Karim Chowdhury, executive engineer of the drainage and disaster management unit of CCC, admitted that water is spilling from the flyover at several points under his jurisdiction.

“Our team has already inspected the areas and found that the pipelines have cracked. We will install new pipelines after the rainfall subsides,” he said.

He also admitted that no pipelines were replaced in the last two monsoons.
