persistent cloud cover, occasional thunder, and gusty winds.

The weather disrupted daily life, particularly for students and office-goers, as waterlogging was reported in several parts of the capital.

Rainwater accumulated on various roads and alleys across the capital, in areas including Tikatuli, Hossaini Dalan, New Market, and in front of the administrative block and emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as well as Agasadek Road and Rajarbagh.

“I had to wade through water to enter the administrative block of Dhaka Medical College Hospital this morning,” said Anowar Hossain, a resident of Kazipara.

Traffic movement slowed in several areas, adding to commuters’ suffering.

Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid told The Daily Star that the situation may persist, with intermittent rain likely throughout the day.

“The current weather pattern may continue for the next three to four days in different parts of the country,” he said.

The Met Office attributed the weather to active thundercloud formation over the country and a developing low-pressure system in the Bay.

Responding to whether the situation qualifies as a Kalbaishakhi (nor’wester) -- typically marked by short but intense storms -- Bazlur Rashid said the current system is different.

He explained that slow-moving deep convective clouds are causing prolonged, intermittent rainfall, rather than short, intense bursts. The sky may clear temporarily before rain resumes, he added.

According to Met office data, the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded in Nikli, Kishoreganj, at 160 mm. Bhola recorded 151 mm and Feni 148 mm.

Russel Rahman, public relations officer of Dhaka South City Corporation, said their teams are working to minimise waterlogging in DSCC areas.
