An infant died with symptoms of measles at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) yesterday afternoon.

The deceased, identified as Chan, 2, son of Golam Rasul, was admitted to the hospital’s measles isolation centre around 11:00am and died at approximately 2:00pm while undergoing treatment.

According to KMCH authority, the child was brought from Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah.

Dr Syeda Rukhsana Parveen, head of the paediatrics department at KMCH, confirmed the death.

She said the 23-month-old child had been brought to the hospital in a critical condition and was severely malnourished.

“The child had not received any of the recommended vaccinations during the past 23 months,” she said, adding that doctors initiated treatment with utmost care immediately after admission, but he succumbed within a few hours.

Earlier, on April 9, a 10-month-old infant named Shamim also died at the same hospital’s measles isolation ward after being brought from Jhenidah for advanced treatment.

According to data from the Office of the Divisional Director of Health in Khulna, till now a total of 752 children were admitted to hospitals with measles-like symptoms across the division’s 10 districts from March 15. Among them, 51 cases were confirmed as measles.

Md Mujibur Rahman, the divisional director of health, confirmed that nine children died during this period.
