“The visit reflects Australia’s long-standing partnership with Bangladesh and its support for inclusive, transparent, and resilient democratic institutions as a foundation for sustainable development and regional stability,” said a statement of the Australian High Commission in Dhaka issued yesterday.

“It underscores Australia’s commitment to supporting democratic governance, strong parliamentary institutions, and inclusive political participation,” the statement also said.

Australia supported Bangladesh’s 13th National Elections held in February this year through the UN Development Program-led BALLOT Project.

During the visit, the Australian delegation will meet with National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, and other MPs.

The delegation is also expected to observe parliament proceedings, and will exchange views on shared priorities, including clean and green development, civics and democracy, youth engagement, gender equality, women’s political participation and leadership, financial transparency and parliamentary oversight.

Earlier on Tuesday, Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle briefed State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed about the visit.

She also discussed the possibility of LNG supply from Australia to Bangladesh to meet Bangladesh’s energy demand, bilateral cooperation in agriculture and climate change, as well as enhancement of bilateral trade and investment.

Shama Obaed stressed cooperation in skills development of Bangladesh’s labour forces and women empowerment, and expressed hope that the visit would enhance Bangladesh-Australia bilateral relations following the formation of the new government.
