Police recovered the body of a young man from a maize field in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur early yesterday.

The deceased, identified as Joy Islam, also known as Jalil, 25, is from the Damaikhetro Pramanikpara area in Nijpara union of the same upazila.

Quoting family members and locals, Birganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said Jalil returned home from a local bazar around 10:00pm on Sunday, went out again shortly after, and came back about an hour later before going to sleep, saying he had already eaten outside.

Around midnight, his father, however, found Jalil’s room empty. The family then informed neighbours and began searching for him, the OC said.

Around 3:30am, locals found Jalil lying face down on a ridge of a maize field about 500 yards from his house.

Police recovered the body, prepared an inquest report, and sent it to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

“The exact cause of death will be clear after the autopsy,” the OC said. A case is being filed in connection with the incident.

The victim’s family has demanded a proper investigation to find the cause of death and hold the culprits accountable.
