“This is the first case in which they secured bail after their arrest in August 2024,” Salim said.

The court also granted bail to AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, a retired judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, in the same case following a bail petition.

According to the defence, Inu is currently facing more than 100 cases linked to the July uprising.

Court sources said Menon is facing several dozen cases filed after the uprising.

Inu was arrested on August 26, 2024, from a relative’s house in Dhaka’s Uttara, while Menon was arrested from Dhaka’s Gulshan on August 22 the same year.

The case in which they secured bail was filed on August 22, 2024, by pro-BNP lawyer Ziaul Haque.

Case documents state that on February 15, 2021, speaking at a seminar, Inu said, “Ziaur Rahman was not a freedom fighter; he was an infiltrator in the Liberation War.” On July 19, 2013, at separate events, Inu and Menon made objectionable remarks about Ziaur Rahman, it said.

The case also alleges that the accused made defamatory statements about the Zia family on various occasions.
