US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S Paul Kapur is arriving in Dhaka tonight for a three-day visit in the second leg of his Asia tour after India to advance bilateral relations.

Kapur, who arrived in India on Sunday, is scheduled to hold meetings with several ministers, including Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, as well as business leaders and politicians, diplomatic sources in Dhaka and Washington said.

This is the first high-level visit by a US official since the BNP government took office following the February 12 election, 18 months after the mass uprising in 2024.

The Biden administration had put pressure on the previous Awami League government by imposing sanctions on Rab in 2021 and announcing a visa policy in 2023
