“After all these years, the court has finally reopened the door for a proper investigation and moved closer to a formal declaration that his fundamental rights were violated, as well as an order to compensate him for the harm he has suffered,” she said.

This journey toward justice could not progress for the past 15 years due to repeated attempts to suppress the truth, she also said, adding that although the HC had earlier issued several directives for investigation and ordered that all medical treatment be provided by the state, those orders were never properly implemented.

Barrister Sara Hossain also thanked media professionals, saying, “It was the journalists who first broke this story -- revealing how Limon Hossain was shot by Rab, left in a hospital, and then falsely implicated in multiple fabricated cases. Without the media’s role, this story might never have come to light.”

A team of Rab-8, led by then deputy assistant director Lutfor Rahman, reportedly shot Limon in the left leg while he was fetching his family’s pet calf from a field near their house in Chhaturia village of Jhalakathi on March 23, 2011.

On the same day, Lutfor Rahman filed two cases against Limon and several others with Rajapur Police Station on charges of possessing arms and ammunition, obstructing law enforcers from discharging their duties, and attempted murder. Later, Limon’s wounded leg had to be amputated.

Limon’s mother filed a case against six Rab men on April 11, 2011.

Rajapur police initially refused to record the case even after a court order. However, they recorded it on April 26 following a 48-hour deadline set by a Jhalakathi court.
