An expatriate was hacked to death during a clash between two BNP factions over a land dispute in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila yesterday.

The incident occurred around 10:00am in Kala village under Padmakar union.

The deceased, Mahbub Hossain, 40, had returned home four months ago from Cambodia.

Later, he became involved in local politics under a faction led by his cousin and also local Jubo Dal leader Ziaur Rahman Zia.

Zia said there had been a dispute over the land belonging to their relatives with the faction led by ward-level BNP leader Humayun Molla.

“Humayun’s men attacked Mahbub with machetes. We rushed him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, but he died soon after,” Zia added.

Humayun could not be reached over phone for comment.

Dr Faria Tahsin, a physician at the hospital, said Mahbub had deep head injuries caused by sharp weapons, along with wounds to his neck, back and lower waist.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, said police had been deployed to prevent further clashes. “Efforts are underway to arrest the attackers,” he added.
