Asked if there were any legal barriers to including the shapla in the list of symbols, the EC secretary said, “There are no legal barriers... but the EC believes there is no need to include it as an election symbol.”

On NCP’s statement that it would not accept registration without the shapla symbol, Akhtar said, “That’s their matter.”

He said the EC has invited all law enforcement and security agencies involved in election-related activities to a meeting at the EC Secretariat on October 20.
