Police and armed activists of then ruling Awami League committed killings during the July uprising at 438 locations across 41 districts, a prosecution witness told the International Crimes Tribunal-1 yesterday.

Md Alamgir, the investigation officer of the case filed against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her two top aides, said lethal weapons were used against unarmed protesters in more than 50 districts.

“These prove the crimes committed during the July uprising were widespread, systematic, and targeted civilian population,” he said while testifying as the 54th and last witness in the case.

Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and ex-IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who turned an approver, are the other accused.

The IO yesterday completed his deposition that he began on Sunday, and the defence counsel for Hasina and Kamal began cross-examining the witness. The tribunal then adjourned the proceedings of the case until Monday, when the defence lawyer will resume his cross-examination.

Alamgir added that during investigation, he found that the protesters’ locations were tracked using mobile phone data by agencies like the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), after which they were killed, injured, and unlawfully arrested.

The police officer told the tribunal that he submitted 2,018 pages of evidence in five volumes titled “The Background of July Uprising: Sheikh Hasina Becoming Fascist Hasina” before the court.
