Police have arrested the aunt of six-year-old Taiba, whose body was recovered from a neighbour’s septic tank in Vedarganj upazila of Shariatpur two days after she went missing.

Taiba’s father filed a case with Sakhipur Police Station on Saturday, accusing several unidentified individuals. That night, police detained her aunt Ayesha Akhter for questioning, said Obaidul Haque, officer-in-charge of the station.

Based on her confessional statement, she was formally arrested yesterday and produced before the court, said OC Obaidul.

Meanwhile, around 11:00am yesterday, locals staged a sit-in in front of Sakhipur Police Station demanding justice. Students of Taiba’s school also formed a human chain on Sakhipur Bazar road, seeking punishment for the accused.

Taiba, daughter of Titu Sardar of Chhoyalkandi village, had been missing since Wednesday. Her body was recovered on Friday afternoon from the septic tank of neighbour Mesbah Uddin Mollah’s house. She was a nursery student at a madrasa.
