in surrounding areas on Thursday, leaving commuters stranded for hours, with many forced to walk long distances.

However, yesterday’s disruption was comparatively less severe, as it coincided with a public holiday, said the OC.

Around 2:00pm, Masud Rana Shourav, chief organiser of July Joddha Sangshad, addressed a press briefing at Shahbagh, where he outlined proposals for the July Charter.

The platform divided the July Charter proposal into three sections -- recognition, state responsibility, and justice.

In the recognition section, the platform proposed that those who died be declared “July Martyrs” and officially recognised as national heroes, while the injured be honoured as “July Warriors (Bir)”.

The second section outlines the state’s responsibility, including lifelong honour, healthcare, education, and welfare support for both the martyrs’ families and the injured.

It calls for full government responsibility for their well-being, covering medical treatment, rehabilitation, and employment opportunities. It also proposes a dignified lifelong allowance, establishing it as a legal right. Any form of negligence, discrimination, or denial of these rights would be considered “treason or a serious criminal offence”. A dedicated legal aid and protection centre is also proposed.

In the final section, they demanded the prosecution of those responsible for violence against protesters, following international legal standards. It also proposes forming an independent truth and justice commission to record testimonies and investigate abuses.

Meanwhile, later in the day, a group of injured participants from the July uprising, currently undergoing treatment at different hospitals, dispersed the protesters demonstrating for the July Charter around 6:30pm.

The injured group arrived at the protest site and drove away those demonstrating. During the incident, police were also seen actively dispersing the protesters.

Md Yasin, one of the “July Warriors” protesters, said, “Police beat me on my back. A group came from PG Hospital [BMU] and attacked us. They tore down our stage. While some of them may have been injured during the uprising, most were outsiders who didn’t want our movement to succeed.”

Another demonstrator, Abdur Rahman, said, “We had vacated the footpath. After the evening, we only continued our sit-in without blocking the roads. But they attacked us without warning. One of our sisters, who was injured in July, had her hand broken.”

Masud Rana Shourav, chief organiser of the movement, said, “Both the police and another group of injured individuals jointly attacked us. Two of our members have been admitted to the hospital, and several others are injured. We are now gathering at the Raju Memorial Sculpture. Our next course of action will be announced later.”

Khalid Monsur, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, said, “The demonstrators had blocked three directions of the intersection. The group of injured individuals, currently receiving treatment at different hospitals, dispersed them, citing public suffering.”

He, however, claimed that police did not take any action.

Following the incident, no demonstrations were seen at the Shahbagh intersection.
