Out of 22 different tasks involved with rice production, 17 are done by women, yet their labour goes unrecognised, said Shaheen Anam, executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, at an event yesterday.

She was speaking about the unpaid labour conducted by women, at the “Green-e Sampurna Awards 2025” ceremony.

“The male farmer does not hand over the proceeds of selling the harvest to the female members of his family who had been intrinsically involved with the production process,” said Anam. “Similarly domestic work done by women is always unaccounted for, even though economic cost of their labour is much more than economic contribution of women in formal labour force.”

Sampurna Foundation awarded 13 women to honour their professional achievements at an event at the Shilpakala Academy. Veteran actor Dolly Zahur was given the lifetime achievement award.

The other awardees from the television media included actors Apu Biswas, Mehzabien Chowdhury and Malaika Chowdhury, voice artists Somnur Monir Konal and Tanjin Mithila, and presenter Mousumi Mou.

Other awardees include Prof Kanij Fatema, chairperson of department of paediatric neurology at Bangladesh Medical University (formerly BSMMU), retired secretary Hosne Ara Begum, women’s national cricket team batter Sharmin Akhter Shupta, lawyer and model Peya Jannatul, and journalist Zyma Islam.

Shaheen Anam, the chief guest, handed over the awards, along with Anie Chowdhury, chairperson of Green-E.

This is the third year running for this award, which was co-organised by Green-E.
