sand trader Nunu Mia are reportedly leading the operation, selling up to 100 truckloads of sand daily.

Residents of Chinitola expressed frustration over dust from sand-laden trucks, which covers their markets and homes. Despite repeated complaints, the issue remains unresolved.

Mintu Mia admitted that the operation is unauthorised but has continued for years with little opposition.

Melandah UNO SM Alamgir Hossain said illegal sand extraction is prohibited and legal action will be taken against those responsible.

In Bakshiganj, illegal sand and soil extraction from the Old Brahmaputra, Dashani, and Jinjiaram rivers continues to wreak havoc, especially during the dry season when water levels drop. Syndicates extract sand using dredgers and remove topsoil from farmland to sell to brick kilns, significantly reducing soil fertility.

Locals reported that despite periodic crackdowns, the operations quickly resume, and the government receives no revenue from the illicit activity.

Bakshiganj residents demanded stricter enforcement of the law, as occasional raids have proven ineffective. They said the authorities must take more substantial and regular action to halt the destructive activities that are causing long-term environmental damage.

In Jamalpur Sadar, sand traders have been lifting sand from the Brahmaputra river for years, increasing the risk of collapse of the vital Brahmaputra Bridge.

However, the administrations of Jamalpur and Sherpur remain indifferent.

In Sarishabari, influential locals have been extracting sand from the Jhenai river. Although the administration occasionally conducts drives and punishes sand lifters, the practice continues.

Deputy Commissioner Hasina Begum said drives are being conducted regularly in all upazilas from where sand is being lifted, and administrations have been asked to stop illegal sand lifting.
