The marriage tax imposed by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) was officially repealed on January 21, 2025, after being in effect for just over a year.

The tax, introduced on January 1, 2024, was implemented as part of DSCC’s revenue collection strategy.

A YEAR OF TAXATION: HOW MUCH WAS COLLECTED?

Under this tax, DSCC charged Tk 100 for every marriage registered within its jurisdiction. By January 15, 2025, the collected revenue had reached Tk 3,23,500.

However, on January 21, this year, the Ministry of Law ordered the suspension of the tax collection process.

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul then said, “Tax was imposed on marriage registration. The ministry has cancelled this illogical tax.”

The tax was implemented under the Municipal Corporation (Taxation) Act of 1986, which granted DSCC the authority to impose levies on various civic matters.

The City Corporation Ideal Tax Schedule 2016 outlined a structured taxation system for marriages -- Tk 100 for the first marriage or remarriage after the spouse’s death; Tk 5,000 for a second marriage while the first wife is still alive; Tk 20,000 for a third marriage with the first two wives still living; and Tk 50,000 for a fourth marriage under the same conditions.

Additionally, DSCC would charge Tk 200 for a remarriage if the existing wife was mentally unstable or unable to bear children.
