Nahid Hasan Khondokar, a leader of Students Against Discrimination (SAD) in Rangpur, has been accused of demanding extortion money from a person in the district.

A video went viral on social media on Saturday.

SAD Rangpur city unit issued a show-cause notice, signed by its coordinator Ali Milon, asking Nahid to explain his actions within three days.

Imtiaz Ahmed, convener of the organisation’s Rangpur committee, citing their preliminary investigation, said the video could be a part of an attempt to tarnish Nahid’s reputation and discredit SAD. “If any evidence of wrongdoing is found, organisational action will be taken.”

Abu Saim, superintendent of police in Rangpur, said no formal complaint has been filed so far.

Contacted, Nahid denied the accusations, claiming it was a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation and discredit the SAD. “I went [to the spot] to investigate illegal sand extraction six or seven days ago. I did not demand a single taka from anyone. They even offered me money, which I did not take,” he said.

Nahid alleged the controversy was engineered by a faction of the Jubo League to defame him.
