Officials from 25 different cadres of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) staged a protest yesterday, demanding an end to inter-cadre discrimination and opposing what they claim to be biased and unjust suspension by the administration cadre.

The protest, organised by the Inter-Cadre Discrimination Elimination Council, included a one-hour demonstration from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Officers stood in front of their respective offices wearing black badges and holding banners to highlight disparities within the civil service, according to a press release from the organisation.

The protests took place in front of various government offices and hospitals at district and divisional levels. However, emergency services, including hospital emergency departments, remained operational.

The council criticised the recent suspensions of 12 officials from the 25 cadres, arguing that they were penalised for “minor offences,” such as Facebook posts, while administration cadre members faced no consequences for similar actions.

It claimed this reflects clear discrimination in the handling of civil service officials.

The council warned that if the suspension orders are not withdrawn within the next week, they will announce stricter protest programmes.
