The Democratic Rights Committee, a platform formed after August 5, has urged the government to take active measures against organised violence, including murder, rape, robbery, extrajudicial killings, sexual harassment, public death threats, and the suppression of creative activities.

In a statement signed by the committee member, Prof Anu Muhammad, it expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of murder, rape, mob violence, and killings across the country.

“Various cultural activities are being obstructed, and attacks continue on women’s movement, sports, and other activities. Shockingly, no action has been taken despite public death threats against prominent writers and teachers,” the statement said.

Referring to the recent killing of a local youth near an Air Force base at Samitipara in Cox’s Bazar, the committee demanded accountability from the authorities and an independent investigation. It also urged the media to actively report such incidents.

The statement raised concerns about universities, citing the expulsion of nine female students from Chittagong University for protesting group violence and the proctor’s disgraceful behaviour, which it said endorsed sexual harassment.

It also condemned naming a CU building after Fazlul Quader Chowdhury, an anti-Liberation War figure, and demanded its reversal.
