Golam Rabbani Tipu, a Swechchhasebak League leader and former councillor from Khulna, was gunned down near Hotel Seagull in Cox’s Bazar -- one of the most dangerous areas along Cox’s Bazar beach. This has raised questions about why he went to that spot.

Even the street lights and CCTV cameras in the area are currently out of order.

Tipu was shot on the footpath near the pine tree garden opposite the hotel, close to Sughandha Point on January 9. The spot is usually quiet, especially at night. It is suspected that someone Tipu knew might have called him to the location with the woman who shared the same hotel room with him. The woman is still missing.

Police recovered Tipu’s two phones from the crime scene, but they remain locked, and the last calls made are yet to be identified.

“We will send the phones to an expert to access the call logs as part of the investigation,” said Ilyas Khan, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station.

The motive behind Tipu’s murder is still under investigation, the OC added.
