The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been granted permission to interrogate Maj Gen (sacked) Ziaul Ahsan and former deputy commissioner of the Detective Branch Moshiur Rahman in connection with the case lodged over the murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Imran Hossain approved the PBI’s request on January 8, court sources confirmed to BSS.

The investigation officer, PBI Additional Superintendent of Police Azizul Haque, filed the plea, saying key information could be uncovered by questioning the two former security forces officials.

“PBI has information that Ziaul and Moshiur were involved in the initial stage of the investigation into the case. Ziaul Ahsan was the additional director general (operation) of Rab and Moshiur was the DC of DB at the time,” said court sources, quoting the IO’s plea.

ASP Azizul Haque, however, refused to comment on the latest development in the case, saying PBI is continuing its probe with much importance.

The journalist couple was murdered at their rented flat in the city’s West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012. Runi’s brother Nawser Alam filed a murder case with the Sher-e-Banglanagar Police Station.
