Since childhood, Nukhingsai Marma had admired the actions of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and dreamed of one day joining their ranks. That dream became a reality yesterday as she stood among the recruits at the passing out parade for the 102nd batch at the BGB Training Centre and College in Satkania, Chattogram.
Nukhingsai, a young woman from Bandarban, secured the top position among 46 female recruits and ranked high among 695 recruits overall.
The youngest of three siblings from a farming family, Nukhingsai, 20, reflected on her challenging journey. Growing up in the hilly areas of Bandarban, education was an uphill battle, with schools miles away and resources scarce.
“My parents worked tirelessly to support my education, and their sacrifices, along with the encouragement of my extended family, motivated me to pursue my dream. Now, I want to protect the land of my country,” she said.
The passing out parade was attended by Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He urged the recruits to dedicate their lives to the nation’s security.
He emphasised their critical role in safeguarding Bangladesh’s 4,427 km-long border and ensuring the safety and security of its people.
The event also saw the presence of BGB Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddique, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, and other senior officials.
The recruits, who completed 23 weeks of training, officially began their journey with the oath-taking and parade. Among them, Nayeem Mondol was recognised as the top performer in training, embodying the spirit of dedication and excellence.
During the event, the home adviser addressed concerns about ongoing border challenges. Regarding the Myanmar border, he assured that the area is under full control despite tensions arising from the conflict between the Arakan Army and Myanmar’s military.
On the recent abduction in Teknaf, he said law enforcement agencies are actively working to rescue the victims.
