“Thus, they [political parties] are putting more on importance to elections rather than reforms,” he told Giorgio Jackson, former Chilean minister for social development, when he was asked about reforms and elections.

Giorgio was part of the British Global Partners Governance (GPG) delegation that met with Nahid to discuss the challenges faced by Bangladesh’s interim government following what Nahid described as an unprecedented uprising.

During the meeting, Nahid highlighted the primary challenges confronting the interim administration.

“Maintaining law and order, addressing economic issues, advancing reform efforts based on consensus with political parties, and establishing global communication are among the most pressing concerns,” he said.

Addressing the delegation, Nahid also highlighted the interim government’s efforts to safeguard human rights and counter international misconceptions.

“Bangladesh has faced a long-standing human rights crisis. People could not vote, and thousands were forcibly disappeared. The people of the country were in a suffocating situation. Therefore, protecting human rights is one of the primary goals of the interim government.

“People do not understand how such a powerful dictator fell in such a short time. As a result, various conspiracies are going on both inside and outside the country. Propaganda is also being spread about minority repression. Many are trying to deny that this movement was a people’s uprising,” Nahid said.

When Lord Jeremy Purvis, former member of the Scottish Parliament, asked about the support required from the international community, Nahid said, “Your experience and advice on the post-uprising democratic process and the trial of genocide are crucial for us.”
