Beneficiary families were also provided with tube wells, latrines, slatted houses for goat and sheep rearing, as well as agricultural tools.

Ashish Kumar Mazumdar, the project coordinator and agronomist, explained that the project’s goal is to enhance the resilience of poor, marginalised, and climate-vulnerable communities against the adverse impacts of climate change in flood-prone areas of Bangladesh.

These elevated homesteads have brought smiles to 525 families in the char areas.

Nurul Haque Sarkar, executive director of NAZIR, emphasised that the project targeted poor and marginalised individuals as beneficiaries.

He expressed the hope that, with increased funding from donor organisations, more families could benefit from the project, alleviating their suffering.

Additionally, he suggested that the government consider implementing similar projects to ease the plight of char-dwelling communities facing frequent floods.

The two unions are home to around 16,000 families, with most of them relying on crop cultivation and cattle rearing for their livelihoods, according to the UP chairmen.

Yearly, the frequent floods triggered by the tidal waters of the river cause substantial loss of life and property in the northern region of the country, including Lalmonirhat.
