Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) was established in 1972 with 78 jute mills. But over time, due to losses and mismanagement, the number of state-owned jute mills came down to 25 in 2020. The BJMC was incurring losses to the tune of hundreds of crores of taka year after year, but it did not address the corruption or the management issues that were behind this. Sadly, the government announced the closure of state-owned jute mills in 2020.

It is surprising that when the state-owned mills closed down, private jute mills were making profits. The government had promised that it would reopen the jute mills under private initiatives. But that still has not happened. Many jute mill workers are passing their days in hardship, waiting for work opportunities in the new jute mills once they are reopened.

At present, the demand for jute and jute products is increasing in the world market. The government should take this opportunity and make concrete plans to rejuvenate our jute sector, employ the unemployed jute mill workers and end their sufferings.
