Remove illegal structures in 2 months: HC

The High Court yesterday imposed an injunction on leasing out Chakirpasa Beel in Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram, asking the authorities to remove all illegal structures from the waterbody within two months.

A bench consisting of Justice KM Kamrul Qader and Mohammed Showkat Ali Chowdhury came up with the ruling in response to a petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) recently.

In the ruling, the court instructed the divisional commissioner of Rangpur and deputy commissioner of Kurigram not to lease out the beel, and asked the superintendent of police in Kurigram and UNO of Rajarhat to dismantle all the illegal structures from the waterbody within two months.

Chairpasa Beel locally known as branch river ends up in Teesta River. The beel has been shown as a pond and leased out to a non-fishing association.

The court also instructed the divisional commissioner and DC to submit a report on what steps they have taken in this regard.
