Bring perpetrators to book: speakers

Domestic workers and civil society members yesterday demanded exemplary punishment for those involved in killing Tamanna Akhter (18), a house help in Dhaka’s Rupnagar, within 90 days.

In addition, they pushed for the ratification of ILO Convention 189 and the inclusion of domestic workers in the Labour Act 2006 to provide a decent and safe working environment for them.

They made the demands at human chains in the capital’s Mirpur, Khilgaon, Mohammadpur and Badda, organised by Karmajibi Nari and Dushtha Shasthya Kendra, funded by Oxfam in Bangladesh and Global Affairs Canada.

Tamanna fell from a nine-story building on June 23. The victim’s family alleged that the wife of the householder pushed Tamanna off the building.

Tamanna worked at a house in Arambagh, Rupnagar for four to five months.
