Residents of Chituliapara village in Tangail’s Bhuanpur took to the streets yesterday, demanding immediate action to protect their village from the relentless Jamuna erosion.

They demonstrated on the Govindasi-Bangabandhu Bridge Road for an hour to realise their demand.

According to the protesters, the erosion began last month with the rising water levels of the Jamuna, but the situation worsened in recent days, resulting in the loss of over 100 houses.

A portion of the village has already been engulfed by the Jamuna river, they said.

Hearing the news of the protest, Bhuanpur UNO Belal Hossain visited the spot and assured the villagers of taking necessary measures to prevent erosion.

Later, the villagers withdrew the blockade.

Contacted, the UNO said, “The work of placing geo bags in another 100m section of the river would start today (yesterday).”

The villagers also said their repeated calls for constructing an embankment to protect the area from erosion have been falling into the deaf ears of the authorities concerned.

A couple of days ago, local lawmaker Tanvir Hasan Soto Monir visited the affected area and assured villagers that emergency measures are being taken to prevent the erosion.

Meanwhile, as the water continues to rise, river erosion has intensified in various places of Bhuapur, Sadar, Kalihati, Nagarpur, and Mirzapur upazilas of Tangail. The Water Development Board is dumping geo bags in the river to prevent erosion.
