Amid the tree felling spree in Tangail in name of development work, the people of Ghatail’s Gorjana village in the district have taken an initiative to save an ancient Banyan tree.

People of all ages used to enjoy the shade of the tree on the bank of the Jhenai river. However, due to the continuous river erosion, the ancient tree was about to be devoured.

Some villagers said they were thinking about how they could protect the ancient tree from erosion. Nearby, an earthwork was going on under the food-for-work programme.

They went there and requested the authorities to help them to protect the tree. On request, the earth was filled from the river to the base of the tree with an excavator.

Kamal Hossain, principal of a local school, said when trees are being cut in different places, the initiative taken by the villagers is commendable.
