Production in the country’s largest urea company has remained suspended for around three months due to a crisis of natural gas.

The authorities of the state-run Jamalpur Jamuna Fertilizer Company Ltd (JFCL) claimed that they were compelled to stop its operation on June 21 as Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL) stopped supplying gas to them.

“We will be able to resume our operation only after getting a sufficient flow of gas,” said Engineer Md Zakir Hossain, managing director of the factory.

As per the agreement, the TGTDCL is supposed to supply natural gas with the pressure of 370 pounds per square inch (psi) to the factory, said Moinul Imran, general manager (technical) of JFCL.

However on June 21, the gas supply fell drastically, with the pressure coming down at 5 psi, said Moinul.

“Even the factory’s engine needs around 40 psi to operate. We had no alternative but to stop our production,” he added.
