Residents of Dhobaura upazila in Mymensingh have been suffering immensely as the 100-metre road in Muktagacha area has been in a dilapidated state for six years.

The road, locally known as “Jaal Bridge”, broke down some six years ago after its construction in 2010 and is yet to be repaired, according to locals. It now mostly stays submerged and unusable.

In addition, the condition of the three-kilometre Kalsindur-Ransinghpur road, an important passage for the villagers to connect to the mainland, is also in a critical state.

Demanding immediate repair of the bridge and the road, hundreds of people from all walks of life formed a human chain at the broken bridge recently.

They also alleged that the authorities concerned didn’t take any step to mitigate the prevailing problem, despite repeated protests by them.

Anwar Hossain Khan, chair of Gamaritola Union Parishad, said he already informed the authorities several times but to no avail.

Although locals suffer throughout the year, it gets particularly difficult during the monsoon, said Anwar.

Contacted, Abu Bakar Siddique, LGED upazila engineer in Dhobaura, said an estimated budget for repairing the road and “Jaal Bridge” has been sent to the department concerned three months ago.

“The tender will be floated within a month,” said the LGED engineer.
