Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has said they have seen blame put on the Supreme Court although its judges think over and over again before handing down death sentence to any person.

Such a situation is very embarrassing for this court and its judges, he said while presiding over a five-member bench of the SC’s Appellate Division yesterday.

The bench was holding a hearing on appeals filed by two Chuadanga men challenging a High Court verdict that had sentenced them to death for the murder of one Manwar Hossain in 1994.

The two men -- Abdul Mokim and Golam Rasul Jharu -- were executed in 2017.

However, everybody was left perplexed after the appeals filed by the two appeared on the SC cause list recently for hearing.

The SC bench yesterday dismissed the appeals and said those (filed through lawyers) became ineffective as the jail appeals (filed through jail the authorities) had been rejected by the court earlier.
