The case was investigated by Inspector Md Shafiqul Islam of Jalalabad Police Station, and he pressed charges on May 6, 2018.

In the charge-sheet, Foyzul, his associate Sohag Miah of Sunamganj’s Derai upazila, father Mawlana Atiqur Rahman, mother Minara Begum, uncle Mawlana Fazlur Rahman and brother Enamul Hasan are accused.

The investigation officer stated that Foyzul was working at Quran Sunnah Research Centre at Surma Market in Sylhet, after failing to complete his Alim from an Alia madrasa.

Inspired by his Kuwait expatriate uncle Sadiqur Rahman, he started learning more about radical Islamism.

After listening to sermons of Muhammad Jasimuddin Rahmani and reading his book, which supposedly promoted the idea of killing a number of notable personalities, Foyzul decided to act.

He then downloaded a book titled “Easy Strategy to Kill Silently”, according to the investigating officer.

Meanwhile, he befriended Sohag Ahmed, who also supplied resources to Foyzul, which provoked him to attack Dr Iqbal. Before the attack, Foyzul scouted the campus several times to plan the attack. The plan and attack were carried out by him alone.

In the charge-sheet, Foyzul was accused of attacking, while Sohag of provoking and helping Foyzul and his family to hide his radical mentality and evidence.

However, Jasimuddin Rahmani, whose sermons and books greatly instigated Foyzul, was not indicted in the case.
