Theatre activist Lily Chowdhury, wife of martyred intellectual Munier Chowdhury, was laid to rest at Dhaka’s Banani graveyard yesterday afternoon.

She was buried at 3pm after her namaz-e-janaza, said Lily Chowdhury’s son Asif Munier Tonmoy.

Earlier in the day, tributes poured in from all quarters for the cultural personality.

Her body was taken to Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka around 11:45am where hundreds of people, including teachers, writers, actors and cultural personalities paid homage to her.

After paying tribute, Shahriar Kabir, president of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, demanded Swadhinata Padak for Lily Chowdhury in recognition of her contribution to the cultural field.

He said, “Martyred intellectual Munier Chowdhury and Lily Chowdhury have enriched our culture in many ways. She was awarded by many organisations. But it is a matter of regret that our government did not give any award to Lily Chowdhury. She did not get Ekushey Padak and Swadhinata Padak. We urge the government to keep Lily Chowdhury’s name in the list of Swadhinata Padak this year.”

Sammilito Sangskritik Jote president Golam Quddus, Ekushey Padak awardee Ramendu Majumdar, filmmaker and cultural personality Nasiruddin Yousuff and Lily Chowdhury’s son Asif Munier Tonmoy, among others, spoke at that time.
