loss of our two boys and caused injury to some. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved families and to the injured persons. A judicial inquiry has already been ordered to ascertain the causes which resulted in this tragedy. The government and the people -- and all political and other organisations-- have a common interest to ensure that such an incident does not recur so that everyone can enjoy the fruits of a peaceful democratic society in Bangladesh.”

WALDHEIM CALLS FOR WORLD HELP TO BANGLADESH

A worldwide billion-dollar relief effort saved Bangladesh from stagnation in 1972 but the outlook is even more threatening in the new year, UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim says today. He asks world nations to put up grain or money to make up 2.5 million tonnes of the 6.7-million-tonne shortage of wheat and rice facing Bangladesh in the new year.
