Chicago on Tuesday became the biggest US city to elect a black woman its mayor, as voters put their faith in an openly-gay political novice to tackle difficult problems of economic inequality and gun violence. Lori Lightfoot, a 56-year-old former federal prosecutor and practicing lawyer who has never before held elected office, won the Midwestern city's mayoral race in a lopsided victory.

Knife attacker kills 2 at China school

A knife-wielding man killed two people and injured two others at a primary school in central China yesterday. T\vo injured primary school students have been sent to hospital with no danger to their lives, the government of Ningyuan county in Hunan province said in a statement. Authorities did not state the identities or age of those killed. Police detained a 31-year-old male suspect.

Case against ex-Nazi camp guard dropped AFP, Berlin

A German court yesterday said it had dropped a case against a former Nazi concentration camp guard, finding the seriously ill 95-year-old unfit for trial. Johann Rehbogen was accused of complicity in mass murder at the Stutthof camp near what was then Danzig, now Gdansk in Poland. Rehbogen was aged 18 to 20 when he served as a guard from June 1942 to September 1944 at the camp.
