A committee led by former shipping minister Shajahan Khan will now take opinion from people before finalising their report on preventing road accidents and bringing discipline in the road transport sector.

The committee yesterday took the decision, after apparently failing to receive expected response from civil society members and media personalities.

As per yesterday's decision, the committee will upload its draft report on the website of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) today and people will be able to give their opinion for the next 15 days.

The committee will then finalise the report taking public opinion into consideration, Shajahan Khan told reporters after a meeting at BRTA auditorium.

Amid growing concern over frequent road accidents, the government formed the body on February 17 and the committee has already prepared a draft report containing 111 recommendations.

On March 27, the committee decided to take opinions from civil society members on March 31, and editors and media personalities yesterday. The committee was supposed to submit the report today.

Only three experts and road safety campaigners attended the meetingheld on March 31.

For yesterday's meeting, the committee invited 41 editors but none of them attended the meeting.

Asked, Shajahan said they had sent invitation letters to the editors' email addresses and even called them over telephone.

He said the road transport and bridges minister is still unwell, and they cannot hand over the report to him at the moment. So the committee decided to upload the report on BRTA website to get public opinion.

Meanwhile, on behalf of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, its secretary general Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury submitted 37 proposals to the committee yesterday.
