Ducsu vice president Nurul Haq Nur yesterday threatened to launch a tougher movement if the Dhaka University authorities do not take any action by April 8 against those who assaulted him and a resident student in separate incidents.

Nur gave the ultimatum at a press briefing at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture, a day after a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists assaulted him and kept him confined in a room at DU's Salimullah Muslim Hall for at least one and a half hours.

"The Vice-chancellor has listened to our demands. We told him that no actions were taken against Chhatra League men who were involved with several attacks previously. We want the authorities to take exemplary steps in this regard by Monday," said Nur.

The Ducsu VP also reiterated demands which include evicting outsiders and non-students from dormitories.The press briefing was held after a group of students brought out a procession on campus, demanding action against the attackers.

Earlier at 9am, the protesting students led by Nur went to the Vice-chancellor's office to placetheir demands.

Following a meeting, VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman assured them of proper steps regarding the attack on Nur after investigation.

He also advised students to resolve problems through talks, and remain vigilant so that no one can make the

situation on campus unstable.

Meanwhile, Ducsu assistant general secretary and BCL's DU unit general secretary Saddam Hussain at Madhur Canteen yesterday claimed that the female protestors were not harassed at SM Hall; rather there was an effort to taint the image of Chhatra League by "staging drama".

Nur was attacked on Tuesday when he went to SM Hall to submit a memorandum, protesting assault of a resident student, Farid Hasan, by some BCL men.

The BCL men also threw eggs at Nur and Akhtar Hossen, social welfare secre-

tary of Ducsu, and harassed other protesters, including Shamsunnahar Hall union VP SheikhTasnim Afroze Emi.

Farid, a master's student of Urdu department, was beaten up allegedly by some BCL men on Monday night over contesting the SM Hall union polls.

Meanwhile, the SM Hall authorities yesterday formed a four-member probe body to investigate into Nur's assault.

The committee, headed by SM Hall house tutor Prof Shabbir Ahmad, was asked to submit a report within a short time, Prof Ahmad toldThe Daily Star.
