A freedom fighter was physically assaulted on Saturday at Khannoi village in Kalmakanda upazila when he asked for return of money he had loaned to a tea-stall owner.

Freedom fighter Abdur Rashid, 65, son of late Ismail Hossain of Uttar Ranigaon village in the upazila, lodged a case yesterday with Kalmakanda Police Station in Netrakona, accusing eight people for assaulting him on Saturday night.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station Md Mizanur Rahman said Habibur Rahman Hobi, 45, of adjacent Khannoi village took Tk 20,000 from Rashid as loan six months ago.

Rashid wanted his money back several times but Hobi did not return the money.

Rashid went to Hobi's village on Saturday evening, and wanted his money back again, which led to an altercation. At one stage, Hobi assaulted the freedom fighter physically.

Later Hobi's wife Monjila Khatun and elder brother Mujibur Rahman joined the attack, the OC said. The attackers also snatched away Tk 5,000 from his possession, it was alleged.

To save his life, Rashid took shelter at a roadside shop where the attackers confined him for around three hours, the OC added.

On information, a group of people from Uttar Ranigaon, led by freedom fighter Md Harun-or-Rashid, went to the spot and rescued Rashid.

Hobi, Monjila and Mujibur are among the people accused in the case, the OC said, adding that police are investigating the case.
