Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) will be formed soon, said Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman yesterday.

He made the comment while speaking as the chief guest at a programme held at Battala on the campus, marking "national flag hoisting day”.

For the first time on March 2, 1971, the then vice president of Ducsu, ASM Abdur Rob, hoisted the first version of Bangladesh's national flag on behalf of Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad atop the DU arts building.

The VC said, “Ducsu leaders took the

initiative to hoist the national flag at the directive of Banagabandhu [Sheikh Mujibur Rahman]. I can feel how important the role of Ducsu was in this regard."

Ducsu will play a pivotal role in any democratic movement of the country in future like it did before, he said.

DU Pro-VC (academic) Prof Nasreen Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin and arts faculty Dean Prof Abu Md Delwar Hossain were present at the programme among others.

Later, a discussion and a cultural programme were held where students of music and dance departments of the university performed.

The last election to Ducsu took place on June 6,1990.
