BNP secretary' general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday claimed that the ruling Awami League leaders' allegation that his party chairperson Khaleda Zia and her family members had illegal assets abroad was baseless.

"We have received information from across the world and found the allegation baseless. The properties they are talking about have no existence," he said, while distributing blankets among the poor and destitute on the High Court mazar premises.

Dhaka south city unit BNP arranged the programme marking the party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman's 53rd birthday.

Fakhrul alleged that the ruling party was spreading falsehoods about Khaleda and her family only to mislead people.

Meanwhile, BNP yesterday announced a countrywide protest programme for tomorrow (December 13), against the price hike of essential commodities and electricity.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed made the announcement through a press briefing at the party's central office in Nayapakan.

He called upon party activists to stage protests in district headquarters across the country, except for Rangpur city where an election is due on December 21.

BNP's all thana units in the capital will hold similar programmes tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the party has formed a committee to coordinate activities and garner support for their mayoral candidate in the Rangpur Gity Corporation election.

Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, vice chairman of BNP, is the convener of the committee.
