Conserving the country's biodiversity is not possible without proper training for government officials on international treaty and conventions, said speakers at a workshop yesterday.

Rio Project arranged the consultation workshop on Rio Conventions with public training institutes at a Dhaka hotel.

Dr M Aslam Alam, a senior secretary of the government and rector of Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, attended the programme as the chief guest with Raisul Alam Mondal, director general of Department of Environment in the chair.

Khurshid Alam, assistant country director, UNDP, was present as special guest. Kaniz Fatema ndc, director general, National Academy for Planning and Development; Istiaque Ahmad, secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests; and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman ndc, director general, Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management, were also present. Ziaul Haque, director, Department of Environment and national project director of the Rio Project, delivered welcome speech. Bangladesh is a party to the three Rio Conventions - Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
