Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quaderyesterday said those who were involved in killing Chittagong city unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Sudipto Biswas, would be brought to book at the earliest.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, was addressing a programme, organised by the AL of Chittagong north and south district units in the port city.

Speakers at the programme said Ataur Rahman was an honest politician throughout his life. He led the party from the front after 1/11 political changeover, they added.

During the programme, around a hundred BCL activists were chanting slogans in front of the stage demanding arrest and punishment of the killers of Sudipto.

Sudipto, an assistant general secretary of Chittagong city BCL unit, was beaten to death minutes after two youths called him out of his house in South Nalapara area of the city on Friday morning.

Quader said, "I have already talked with the prime minister, police headquarters and high officials of Chittagong police."

"I told the police officials that we don't want the culture of impunity... those who were involved in this incident will have to be punished," he said.

"Proper trial and punishment will have to be ensured to stop recurrence of such incidents in future."

Criticising BNP, the AL general secretary said BNP tried to create issues one after another, but could not succeed. "Now they are making an issue out of chief justice's leave... the chief justice went on leave on medical grounds, but BNP alleged that his signature had been forged in the leave application."

AL Publicity Secretary Hasan Mahmud spoke among others with its Chittagong north district unit President Nurul Alam Chowdhury in the chair.
