Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad yesterday in Chittagong said his party believes that the incumbent election commission would be able to present the nation a fair and neutral election.

"We are keeping faith in the new election commission. Hopefully, this commission will be able to present the nation a fair and neutral election," said Ershad while talking to reporters at a hotel in the port city in the afternoon. He visited the hotel to attend a programme of a private bank.

Referring to the full verdict of the Supreme Court that scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution, Ershad said, “After reading the verdict, it seems that we are very unfortunate. It brings our heads down in shame.”

"No institution is intact. All are destroyed. Corruption... rampant fascination for power... no institution is intact," he said referring to the judgment.

There is a lack of good governance in the country, he said, adding that there was nothing in the newspapers except the news of murder and rape.

"Being a woman in this country is a great sin, curse... We hear about women empowerment. But that is only in Dhaka. Outside? In the villages? Girls are not safe," Ershad commented.
