Bureaucratic complicacies cause public harassment and breed corruption in the country, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood reiterated yesterday.

"People don't get government services due to corruption, which eventually creates scope for making black money. And this black money is later laundered abroad and used in different crimes including terrorism," he said.

The ACC chief said this at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding titled "Building Integrity Blocks for Effective Change" with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on prevention of corruption, said a press release.

The ceremony was held at ACC's Segunbagicha headquarters.

Highlighting that political will is most important in preventing corruption, Iqbal said ACC had got sufficient budget allocation for the upcoming fiscal. "We've got what we demanded. It shows government's political stance against corruption," he said.

Mentioning that FIB criticises ACC on various issues, Iqbal said the MoU would create a unique example of the critic and the criticised working together to curb corruption.

On the occasion, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said increasing the allocation for ACC would reflect the government's position against corruption if it gave the commission the liberty to impartially investigate big incidents of corruption.
