Police rescued a tortured woman from the clutch of her dowry greedy husband and sent her to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex.

Although the victim sustained serious injuries in her back, hands, legs, head and face, she is now out of danger, said Dr Salam Sheikh of the hospital.

"On Wednesday, I was tied to a bamboo pole and my husband started torturing me mercilessly for Tk 50,000 dowry," Roksana Akhter, 24, told this reporter during his visit to the health complex.

"My parents in-law played the role of silent onlookers during the incident," she said.

Roksana's father Rustom said his daughter married Hazrat five years ago and at that time Tk 50,000 dowry was given to the bridegroom. Hazrat continued torturing Roksana forTk 50,000 more for the last one year.

Alai Uddin Alai, chairman of Kamlabari Union Parihsad, said informed by him, village police rescued Roksana from her husband's house.

However, accused Hazrat managed to flee the scene.
